About Temple Of Literature

Located in Hanoi, the Temple of Literature is a historical legacy. Established in 1070, it was initially dedicated to Confucius (Chinese philosopher and teacher) and later became Vietnam’s first national university. The temple is one of the hidden places of Vietnam tour packages, and its architectural beauty, its traditional Vietnamese designs and the surrounding gardens, ponds, and ancient pavilions just enhance its beauty.

One of the temple's most attractive features is the Stelae of Doctors, stone slabs mounted on turtle-shaped bases for statues, inscribed with the names of scholars who excelled in royal examinations. Locals believe that touching the turtles brings good luck, good fortune and success.

Interestingly, during the French colonial era, the temple was preserved from destruction, thanks to local efforts to preserve its heritage. Today, it is a symbol of intellectual pursuit and education, and it attracts philosophy lovers from around the globe.
