About Idukki Arch Dam

Idukki Arch Dam is one of the most stunning man-made structures in Kerala, built across the Periyar River. It is the first arch dam in India and also the third tallest arch dam in the whole of Asia. Located between two huge granite hills, Kuravan and Kurathi, this engineering marvel is a sight to behold.

The construction of this dam started in 1969 and was completed in 1974. It was opened to the public in 1976. Since then, it has not only helped generate electricity but has also become a major tourist attraction in Kerala. It stands at a height of 168.91 meters, making it the tallest dam in Kerala.

Over the years, the dam has attracted tourists from across the country, especially nature lovers and photographers. Surrounded by green hills and calm water, it’s the perfect spot to relax and take in Kerala’s natural beauty. Consider booking our Kerala tour packages that include amazing destinations like Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, and, of course, Idukki.
