About Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape

Qobustan, located around 64 kilometres southwest of Baku, is one of Azerbaijan’s most significant cultural and archaeological sites. Known for its well-preserved petroglyphs, mud volcanoes, and semi-desert landscape, Gobustan offers a fascinating look into ancient human life. Gobustan is a key destination included in many Baku tour packages, ideal for travellers interested in history, archaeology, and natural wonders. The Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, containing more than 6,000 rock engravings that date back as far as 40,000 years. These carvings provide rare insights into prehistoric hunting, dancing, and daily life scenes. In addition to the rock art, visitors are drawn to the area’s unique geological features, especially the mud volcanoes, which are among the most active and numerous in the world. A modern interactive museum at the site gives further context to the rock carvings and the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants.
