Durga Temple, also known as Durga Kund Mandir, is a centuries-old temple located in the city of Varanasi. Built in the 18th century by a Bengali queen, the temple is a famous part of many Varanasi tour packages. It stands near the southern end of the city and is close to the Banaras Hindu University.
This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, who is worshipped as the powerful protector of the universe. The idol inside the temple is said to have appeared on its own (called "swayambhu") and is not man-made. The temple is visited by thousands of people, especially during Navratri, when grand celebrations take place.
The temple’s bright red colour represents the fierce form of the goddess. A large pond, called Durga Kund, is located next to the temple. The surroundings are peaceful and allow visitors to enjoy a moment of calm in the otherwise busy city.
