Shri Tungnath Temple, Panch Kedar, located at 12,073 feet in Chopta, Uttarakhand, is the highest Shiva temple in the world. The temple has an amazing story that goes back over 5,000 years, to the time of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. Legend says that after the great war, the Pandavas built this temple to seek Lord Shiva’s forgiveness. The temple’s architecture shows the typical North Indian temple style.
When people go for Chardham Yatra Packages, you can easily add Tungnath Temple to your itinerary, as it is located in Uttarakhand itself. The temple is part of the Panch Kedar temples in Uttarakhand, each with its own special connection to different parts of Lord Shiva’s body. At Tunganath, devotees worship his arms. During winter, the temple gets covered in thick snow, creating a magical sight that draws both pilgrims and nature lovers.
Temple opens from May to October, 6 am to 6 pm daily. Closed during the winter months (November to April) due to heavy snowfall. No entry fee for the temple.
