Chandrashila, which means “Moon Rock” in Sanskrit, is a stunning summit in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Located at an elevation of 13,123 feet, this peak offers one of the most beautiful sunrise views you’ll ever witness. It’s among the few high-altitude treks in India that you can do even in winter, making it a year-round destination for adventure lovers.
Chandrashila is always included in all the Chardham tour packages. The trek starts from Chopta and takes you through dense forests, and finally to the Tungnath temple – the highest Shiva temple in the world. From here, a steep climb leads to Chandrashila Peak, where you get a 360-degree view of major Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedar Peak. During winter, the entire trail turns into a snowy wonderland, attracting both beginners and experienced trekkers.
The summit is open 24/7, but it’s best to start by 4:30 AM for the sunrise. There is no entry fee for the peak itself, though forest permits for the area cost ₹150 – ₹400 for Indians.
