Barren Island is the only confirmed active volcano in the Indian subcontinent. This mysterious island, located in the Andaman archipelago, has been a magnet to scientists and adventurers since its first recorded eruption in 1787. The volcano has been consistently active since 1991, making it a spectacular sight with its occasional steam and smoke displays.
What makes Barren Island truly fascinating is that it sits at the junction of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. Local fishermen tell tales of nights when the dark waters around the island reflect an orange glow from volcanic activity. It is a gem in popular Andaman Tour Packages and is the natural, raw and untamed beauty of this place.
Barren Island lies 135 km northeast of Port Blair. Access requires special permits from the Forest Department.
