About The Thanjavur Maratha Palace Complex, Tanjore
The Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as the Big Temple, is a majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu. Built in the 11th century by the Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola I, this architectural marvel is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple showcases stunning Dravidian architecture, featuring a 66-meter-tall vimana (tower) that stands as one of the tallest in the world. Remarkably, the massive granite structure was constructed without modern technology, and the main sanctum houses a gigantic Shiva lingam. The temple's intricate carvings, frescoes, and bronze sculptures highlight the artistic brilliance of the Chola dynasty. A 25-ton monolithic Nandi (bull) statue sits proudly at the entrance. The Brihadeeswarar Temple remains a vibrant center of spirituality, culture, and historical pride in South India.
