Metekhi Church, officially known as the Virgin Mary Assumption Church of Metekhi, is a significant Georgian Orthodox church situated on a rocky outcrop above the Mtkvari River in Tbilisi. The original church was established in the 5th century by King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of Tbilisi. The current structure, built between 1278 and 1289 by King Demetrius II, features a cross-in-square design with three convex apses and a central dome supported by four archaic pillars. The church has undergone several reconstructions due to invasions and natural disasters. In the 19th century, it served as a prison, and in the Soviet era, it was repurposed as a theater. After Georgia's independence, the church was restored to its original function in 1988. Adjacent to the church is an equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, erected in 1967. Metekhi Church remains an active place of worship and a prominent landmark in Tbilisi, offering panoramic views of the city and the river.
