About Madikeri Fort

Perched atop a hill in the heart of Madikeri, Madikeri Fort is a captivating blend of history, architecture, and culture. Originally constructed in the 17th century by King Mudduraja, this fort has witnessed the reigns of Tipu Sultan, Dodda Vira Rajendra, and the British, each leaving their indelible mark. Visitors are greeted by two imposing stone elephants at the entrance, leading to a complex housing a palace, the Kote Maha Ganapathi Temple, and the Gothic-style St. Mark’s Church—now a museum showcasing artifacts from the fort's storied past, including a portrait of Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa . Open daily from 10 AM to 5:30 PM (closed on Mondays) with free entry, Madikeri Fort offers a panoramic glimpse into Coorg's rich heritage.
