Key Monastery, sitting proudly at 13,668 feet in the Spiti Valley, is one of the oldest and biggest Buddhist centers in Himachal Pradesh. Built-in the 11th century, this monastery looks like a collection of boxes stacked on top of each other, making it a unique sight against the barren mountains. This is the icon of the Spiti tour.
Looking to explore the spiritual heart of Himachal? Check out our Spiti Valley Packages, including a visit to Key Monastery, and it’s easy to see why. This place is famous for its ancient Buddhist paintings called thangkas, old weapons, and rare manuscripts written in the Tibetan language. The monastery is home to about 300 lamas who learn Buddhist practices here. A really beautiful sight here is how it seems to grow out of the mountain itself, with narrow corridors and steep staircases connecting different levels. The prayer room, with its beautiful wall paintings and the smell of butter lamps, gives visitors a real taste of Buddhist and monk culture.
This beautiful Monastery opens daily from 7 am to 7 pm. Generally, there is no entry fee.
