About Brihadisvara Temple, Tanjore

Brihadisvara Temple, located in Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu, is a majestic example of Dravidian architecture and one of India’s most treasured heritage sites. Built by the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is also known as the "Big Temple." The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features a towering vimana (temple tower) that rises over 66 meters, making it one of the tallest of its kind in the world. The entire structure is made of granite, showcasing intricate carvings and exceptional craftsmanship. The temple complex includes beautiful murals, a massive Nandi (bull), and richly decorated sanctums. It stands not just as a place of worship, but as a testimony to the architectural brilliance and spiritual devotion of the Chola dynasty.
